Our Story
Laughter is what brought us together, and laughter became the soundtrack of our journey in getting to know each other. On 16th April, we both responded to a comedian’s post, not knowing it would mark the beginning of a beautiful love story.
I remember looking at Michael’s Instagram, admiring how he had transformed his pain into purpose by creating Grief Tribe, a global organization for men. We began discussing how Michael could support my cousin Reagan, who had lost his wife a few years ago. Soon, we were planning our meeting in Miami, where we got engaged, and as they say, the rest is history.
A beautiful friendship blossomed into a love story, built on mutual respect, a shared love for humanity, and an understanding of each other’s purpose. Our love story has stretched across two continents—South Africa and the United States.
Here’s Michael’s perspective:
Falling in love on Instagram was never part of my self-imposed life plan, but when I met Candice through the JustWhitney post, I fell in love—not once, but three times.
The first time, I fell for her beauty. The second was when, after some arm-twisting and a bit of bribery, she gave me the honour of getting to know her. She shared who she was, what she did, and I realized how much of an asset she was to her South African, Cape Town, and Heideveld communities. The third time was during an emotionally difficult period for me. My
future wife prayed the most heartfelt prayer over me, one that brought up emotions I hadn’t felt since my late Pastor at 1st Baptist Church in North New Jersey. At that moment, I knew I’d be a fool not to make her Mrs. Candice McClendon Booysen.
Since that prayer, I’ve made our marriage and her happiness my highest priority. I look forward to building a healthy, happy relationship and family with the woman I call Canyoncé of South Africa.
Blessed is the man who falls in love three times and blessed is a love that makes you fall deeper inlove with God, yourself and life. Our relationship is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. Together, we discovered love in seasons of surrender and self-work.
